Obituary for Adabel Johnston

Adabel “Ada” Brooks Johnston passed away peacefully on September 28th in Germantown, TN.

Ada was born in Carthage, MS on January 28th, 1927 to Thomas and Ada Brooks. She grew up in Carthage, attended High School, and ultimately graduated from Hinds Junior College.

Ada met James Johnston in high school and married upon his return from service in World War II. Shortly after, she began her lifelong career of being a mother to her two children. She and James were married for 60 years, raising their children in Memphis, TN while living a life focused on family, community, and faith.

One of Ada’s lifelong dreams was to travel. Amazingly, those dreams came to fruition and she and James traveled the world together. She kept detailed accounts of her many trips to Europe which will be enjoyed for years to come. Her passion for flower arranging took her to an NYC floral arrangement competition where she brought home first place in floral and table decoration in 1969. James and Ada attended many seasons of Mississippi State University basketball games with their friends in the 1970s. Her love of basketball persisted throughout her life and she dearly loved watching the Memphis Tigers and the Grizzlies. In her later years, she could still fill out a basketball bracket that would be the envy of most enthusiasts.

Ada’s faith and church community were always the centers of her life. She was devoted to Adult Fellowship, Lay Discipleship, and women's groups at Hernando United Methodist Church. In addition to her service at the church, she spent countless afternoons at the bridge table with her dear friends, where she enjoyed the social camaraderie as much as bringing home the high score.

Later in life, Ada enjoyed her community at The Villages of Germantown where she moved in 2017, making many new friendships.

Ada is survived by her son David Johnston of Germantown, TN, and daughter Barbie Holcomb (Ben Holcomb III) of Pensacola, FL; granddaughter Sara Holcomb (Anthony Fox) of Boston, MA and grandson Ben Holcomb IV of Denver CO; great-grandsons Brooks and August Fox. Preceded in death by her husband James Johnston and daughter in law Voniss Johnston.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 10 am at Hernando Memorial Park. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and family.
