Obituary for Arthur Dovard Gandy Sr.

Arthur D. Gandy Sr, 1943-2023
Chief Warrant Officer 4 Arthur D Gandy, USN (Retired), of Southaven, formerly of Hernando MS passed away peacefully on February 15, 2023, at home with his daughter by his side. Art, as he was known to many in the area was born on August 11, 1943, as the oldest son of the late Dovard and Dovie (Chapman) Gandy of Isney, Alabama. He attended Southern Choctaw County High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in July of 1961.
He began his career as an E1going through Boot Camp in San Diego, Ca. For the next 15-years, served at-sea onboard eleven different auxiliary ships and destroyers that were home ported in ports on both the east and west coast. After achieving the rank of E8, on 1 April 1977, he was commissioned as a Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Navy. For the next 11 years, he served at four different duty locations, Naval Magazine in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines; Naval Base, Charleston, SC; Service Force Sixth Fleet CTF-63 located in Naples, Italy; and Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, VA. On 30 September 1987, he retired from the Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) after completing 26 years active duty. After he retired from the US Navy, he spent the next 18 years working as a civilian contractor for a defense contractor in Washington, D.C. and at Patuxent River, Maryland.
He made many sacrifices (time with his family) and served his country proudly and with honor for 44 years.
Art was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Avis, his parents Dovard and Dovie Gandy along with two brothers and a sister: Gaines, David and Joanne.
He leaves to carry on his memory, three brothers: Charles of DeSoto MS, Hank (Becky) of Quitman MS, and Donald Gandy of Quitman MS. Four children: Bryan (Joyce) of Rochelle Il, Lisa of Southaven MS, Steven (Randi) of Memphis TN, Arthur (Heather) of Southaven MS. In addition, he also leaves three granddaughters, Stephanie Danette of Tucson AZ, Melissa (Cameron) Jones of Southaven MS and Myleigh of Memphis TN.
A memorial will take place on Wednesday February 22 at Hernando United Methodist Church, 1890 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Hernando Ms.
Family and friends will be received from 11:00 to 12:00 pm with services to follow at 12:00 pm.
Burial with military honors will follow the services at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, Memphis, under direction of the Hernando Funeral Home.
