Obituary for Bert Mills

Bert B. Mills, of Hernando, MS, passed away on October 9 at the age of 93. Previously from Water Valley, MS, and Memphis, TN, he was a proud US Navy veteran of WWII, and a retired account executive for WMC-TV in Memphis. Bert was preceded in death by his precious wife of 47 years, Juanita, and a nephew, Scott Mills, and is survived by his brother, Ronald Mills (Judy) of Collierville, TN, two sons, Carter Mills (Amanda) of Charlotte, NC, a data scientist for Carolina Health, and Hunter Mills (Dee Anna) of Cabot, AR, a pilot for Southwest Airlines, two grandchildren, Benjamin and Catherine of Charlotte, NC, and a niece, Heather Derrick, of Wailuku, HI.

Bertie Ben, as his family called him, was a member of our country's 'greatest' generation. Perhaps because Pearl Harbor was attacked on his 14th birthday, Bert quit South Side High School in Memphis at 17 years of age to join the Navy in 1945, requiring his parents' permission for his enlistment. He served on LSM 319 for 3 years, and earned his GED during that time. His ship was decommissioned in Astoria, Oregon in 1948, and Bert left the Navy.

Bert returned to Memphis and began a career as a radio & television technician. His bosses took notice that his fun loving personality & 'gift of gab' would make Bert a great salesman. Thus, Bert's successful career in sales began. He soon met Juanita Hurley, the love of his life, and they married in 1954 in Memphis. A short while later, he moved on to a successful career in radio & television advertising for WMC-TV, retiring in 1990.

Bert was a devoted husband and father. He and Juanita raised two boys of whom they were so proud. They were active members in First Presbyterian Church of Hernando. Bert loved his many friends and was a good friend to many. Music of all kinds gave him great joy. He enjoyed military history, his special programs, and living on Thunderbird Lake. Above all, Bert was a great patriot and believed to his core that America is the greatest country on earth and worth every sacrifice. He will be greatly missed by his family & friends.

Funeral Services will be held at Hernando Funeral Home on Saturday, October 16 at 11:00am, following Visitation from 10-11am, and interment will be at Hernando Memorial Park in Hernando, MS immediately afterward.
