Obituary for Carl Stanford

Carl Dennis Stanford was born February 23, 1940, in Memphis, TN to Edgar and Mary Stanford. He lived in Lake Cormorant all his life and was the proud owner of Carl's BBQ and General Store off Hwy 301. He grew up in a family of eight, where hard work and boot strapping were a part of daily life, and where he learned the importance of God and family. It was his faith that would bring him to a church revival where he met his wife, Amelia Jean, of 62 years. But Restaurateur and spouse are only two of the many titles people came to know and love him by over the years.
My precious Gigi was so many things to so many people. He embodied what it meant to be a servant of the Lord as a Deacon for 55 years and Music Director for over 65 years! He traveled around the Southeast with his gospel group, The Glenn's Chapel Quartet, singing tenor. He loved the great outdoors, and always had cows, chickens, donkeys and a collection of antique tractors.
If there was one thing he liked to talk about more than anything else though, it was his beloved Ole Miss Rebels. He knew every player, went to the spring scrimmage game in Oxford every year and talked smack with the best of them.
Gigi was the grandpa that made each grandkid feel like they were the favorite, and showered us with extra love and attention and candy before supper, when nana wasn't looking. He was always quick with a joke, even if he was the only one who got the punchline, we'd all be rolling with laughter by the end.
He may not be here anymore, but I know I will see him again one day where we can sing our favorite hymns together. Thank you, God, for the incredible man who was my Gigi. There will never be another like him.
Carl is survived by his loving wife Amelia Stanford; children Carla Jeanne Harwell (Tony) of Southaven, MS, Lisa Carole Zeman of Newport, AR, Carl Dennis Stanford Jr of Lake Cormorant, MS; siblings Billie Dale Combes of Walls, MS, Joyce Hall of Lake Cormorant, MS, Graylin Stanford of Nesbit, MS; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Mary Stanford and brothers Edgar Stanford Jr. and Sam Stanford. The family will be receiving friends Wednesday, August 17th, from 4-8 pm at Glenn's Chapel Church. Funeral Service will be held Friday at 10 am at Glenn's Chapel Church. Interment to follow at New Bethlehem Cemetery in Horn Lake, MS. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be sent to Glenn's Chapel Church or St. Jude Hospital.
