Obituary for Charles Edward Word

Charles Edward Word, 74, of Pearl, MS formerly of Hernando, MS passed away on January 18, 2021. Charles was known by many names, Charlie, Ed, Eddie, Husband, Pop, Poppy and even Chief. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Altie Word. Charles leaves behind Sandra, his wife of 54 years, two sons, Chuck (Geri) and Mike (Amy) and brother, Jimmy Lee Word. Charles leaves a legacy in 3 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, 5 great grandsons and 4 great granddaughters along with numerous extended family and friends. Charles retired from Memphis Fire Department in 1994 as a Lieutenant at Station 41. Charles assisted in the creation of Lewisburg Volunteer Fire Department and Desoto county Fire and Rescue. He served as Chief at Lewisburg for 17 years, along with serving as Desoto County Fire Coordinator and also as an Arson Investigator for Desoto County Sheriff’s Department. Charles was a Master Mason with the Hernando Masonic Lodge #51 and a member of the Western Peacemakers Club of Mendenhall, MS. Charles was truly man’s man and touched thousands of lives during his 40 years of service and dedication in many positions of the Fire Services. Charles had a true servant’s heart and never met a stranger. Visitation will be Friday, January 22, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:00, with funeral at 2:00 at Hernando Funeral Home, Hernando, MS. He will be greatly missed but his family rejoices in his Heavenly Homecoming.
