Obituary for Dee Greenwood

Dee was born to the late Harry and Teena Martin, on October 9th, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama; the fourth daughter of 5 girls.

Dee loved the Lord and lived a life of joy and adventure, traveling with her family and excelling in all that she set out to accomplish. She loved and lived well, making an impact wherever she went. Her adventures were cut short due to her battle with Dementia that began at the age of 55. She is widowed by her late husband, Walter Hayes Greenwood, of 38 years, before his passing in April of 2021. Dee leaves behind 4 boys who love and miss her dearly; 2 sons of her own, and 2 stepsons whom she loved and cared for as her own. Her sons are: Charles (Michelle) along with her grandchildren Jackson, Brady & Gracie; and Bobby (Audrie) along with her grandchildren Amelia, Eva & Josiah; Glenn (Mary) along with her grandchildren Joshua, Noah & Bella; and Brent (Melani) along with her grandchildren Joshua & Olivia. Dee also leaves behind a beloved Step Mother-in-law, Jean Greenwood of Dickson, Tennessee, and her beloved 4 Sisters, Connie James, Betty Jo Cline, Vicki Bruton and Debbie Scheel, and many nieces and nephews.

Dee grew up with her sisters in Memphis, Tennessee where she spent her years singing in church, playing softball and volleyball in school, and meeting her first husband, then high school sweetheart, Gary Jones. Dee's favorite story to tell of her high school years in Memphis was when she had the privileged opportunity to meet Elvis Presley and sell him a tie while working in the men's department of Parks Belk department store.
She attended Union University in Jackson, Tennessee and graduated with a 4.0 her senior year with a major in History. She and Gary married while working at the Boys and Girls Club. Her firstborn Charles "Chuck", was born in 1980. Her second marriage to Hayes took place in February of 1983, and her son Bobby was born in 1985. While still in Jackson, Dee worked for the Juvenile Detention Center helping to rehab teenagers. Chuck can remember many times, his mother loving on and inviting troubled teens over for the holidays.

In the fall of 1988, Hays and Dee, Chuck and Bobby, relocated to Goshen, New York. Dee became a successful and beloved 8th Grade teacher at Calvary Christian Academy in Warwick. She spent almost all of her free time at the ball fields for her boys, becoming Soccer Mom and Baseball Score keeper. But her personal hobbies were playing competitive Tennis at the Orange County Racquet Club and running 5 miles a day.

She continued her career of Teaching in both Houston, Texas for 4 years and Buffalo, New York for the next 6 years at New Covenant Christian Academy and the city of Buffalo. After contracting her disease, Hayes and Dee moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where he would care for her for the next 10 years. Together they enjoyed the outdoors with many trips to Estes Park and even Mt. Rushmore.

Even in the face of her Dimentia, Dee's family and caretakers at Brookdale Niagara in Buffalo and Wesley Meadows in Hernando, MS have stolen many sweet moments of laughter and dancing and kisses on the cheek over the years. She has brought joy and sweetness wherever she's been. And in her final hours she was surrounded by those who deeply cared for her; her 4 loving sisters and her boys. She was a mom until the end.

Dee's family will be celebrating her life privately, however because Dee lived in a number of different places and has friends all over, friends are encouraged to leave your condolences, thoughts and prayers here on this webpage. Please share a story or memory of Dee so that we can all share these memories together.
