Obituary for Harry Odom

Harry W. Odom, Sr.

Harry W. Odom, Sr. of Hernando, MS, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 15, 2021, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital after a brief illness.

Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Grady F. and Carmel Haynes Odom, and his wife of 50 years, Bettye Pinion Odom.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Billie Carr Odom, Deborah Odom Graves (Rocky), Harry W. Odom, Jr. (Dale), and Annette Odom Stevenson (Dale). Harry was blessed by God with four grandsons, Rhett Graves (Amy), Ian Odom, Ryan Stevenson (Lindsay), and Tyler Stevenson (Gracie), as well as nine (9) great grandchildren who dearly loved their “Pawpaw”.

He recently celebrated his 90th birthday and will be greatly missed until we worship with him again at our Heavenly Father’s throne. His faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ as our only hope of salvation was anchored in his daily reading/studying of God’s Word and faithfulness in prayer. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church, Hernando, MS.

After his retirement from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1993, he spent much of his time fishing, camping, and traveling. He was a real-life “MacGyver” who could fix just about anything with items he had on hand. He had an amazing engineering mind!

Whether singing hymns in church or playing his banjo in his recliner, music was one of his greatest joys in life. He was a self-taught musician and learned to play the piano and keyboard, banjo, harmonica, autoharp, hammered dulcimer, and mountain dulcimer. For many years he used the talents the Lord gave him to bless those in nursing homes and various church events. He loved to travel to bluegrass festivals and even hand crafted several beautiful hammered dulcimers and mountain dulcimers in the 1990’s. He brought so much fun and happiness to his family and others with his lively tunes.
He has left a legacy of love and faithfulness to God, love for family, and lots of hilarious ‘Pawpaw-isms’ for us to quote for years and generations to come.

Graveside service will be held at Hernando Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 24th at 2 pm.
