Howard Eugene Phipps, age 88, of Hernando, MS passed away June 7, 2022 at his home after a brief illness. He was born in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee on May 8, 1934 to John Harrison Phipps, Sr. and Minnie Province Phipps. At the age of 21 he joined the army serving from 1956 to 1959. He was home on a leave when he met and fell in love with Betty Jean Bailey. They were engaged on his next leave and married on the one after that. They were married 65 years at his passing. Together they raised three daughters - Monica Kirby (Ray), Sharon Minks (Alan), and Angela Black. Having learned welding as a trade in the service, he worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron Nuclear Company most of his working career. He loved black coffee, an excellent pipe, hunting for deer, Tootsie Roll lollipops, and a good (corny) joke. But above all he loved his Jesus. He spent much of his time in the Word and served as a Sunday school teacher as well as the church treasurer for many years.
In addition to his wife and daughters, he leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Fund at Parkway Baptist in Hernando to further the spread of the Gospel. The family will receive friends, Friday, June 10th, 9am until service time at 10am all held at Parkway Baptist Church, Hernando, MS. Interment will take place directly after at Forest Hill South Cemetery.
