Obituary for James Norwood "Jim" Meyers

James Norwood (Jim) Meyers, 63, of Hernando, MS, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2021. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather of eight. Born the only child of the late Memphis Fire Department legend, Norwood Homer “Snooky” Meyers and Mary Nell on June 19, 1957 in Memphis, TN. He graduated from Raleigh Egypt High School in Memphis. He was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Hernando. He joined the Shelby County Fire Department on March 22, 1976 when he was just 18 years old. As of his recent retirement in January of this year, Battalion Chief, James N. Meyers owned the distinction of having been the longest serving member of the Shelby County Fire Department in its history! Through his many years of service, Jim experienced most every aspect of fighting fires, training, leading personnel and responding to emergencies and needs among the citizens of Shelby County. He was known for his energetic presence and positive, “get the job done” attitude. He loved living life and he loved his position to serve the community. As much as he enjoyed hunting, fishing, staying fit and cracking jokes, he loved spending time with family… particularly his grandchildren. Jim married Bettye Regina “Jeanie” on May 4, 1991. In the late nineties, Jim and his loving wife of 30 years, Jeanie, relocated to Hernando, MS and set up a homeplace directly across from his lifelong friend, David Carter. Jeanie’s green thumb and Jim’s attention to detail and unceasing energy ultimately transformed the house and property into what is affectionally called “Jim’s Resort and Spa” by family and friends. Jim’s love for living life made visits to Jim’s Resort memorable. From simple, small gatherings to the infamous “Jimapalooza”, his home was your home to everyone who visited. Weddings were where Jim shined. Not only would he get the chance to dress up, eat, and hear good music… he liked to dance! And he was quite good at it! More than a few have been swirled around the floor by Jim Meyers, and those who have will always remember it! He loved music, particularly Motown. As much as Jim enjoyed living life, however, he took his job and responsibilities to his co-workers and subordinates seriously. On many a personal day off before scheduled to be on duty the next day… in the middle of a lively gathering even… he would slip off while no one was watching and disappear to bed in order to be sharp for the next day. That is just the way he was. As full of life as he was, he never made a production of leaving the party. He wanted others to continue enjoying themselves and each other. Sadly, such was the case at 2:30 Friday afternoon. Surrounded by the ones he loved and tired from his resilient fight, he waited until no one was watching and just slipped away quietly. Jim leaves behind his loving wife Bettye Regina “Jeanie”, four children; Kristina Meyers Knabb (Charley), Chad Norwood Meyers (Anna Mary), James Derek Zambroni (Sarah), and Jared Tyler Meyers, and eight grandchildren; Lydia, Sutton, Ann Parker, Benjamin, Logan, Braden, Callen, and Victoria. Visitation at 9:00 a.m. and service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 13th at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, TN with burial to follow at Hernando Memorial Park Cemetery in Hernando, MS. Serving as pallbearers at the families request will be, Frank Isley, Larry Riedel, Craig Carter, Brian Carter, Bryan Brown and Kevin Reeves.
