James Cecil Philpot, Jim, born July 11, 1933, died October 8, 2021. He was preceded in death by his son, James Andrew Philpot, his father Earl Cannon Philpot, his mother, Theresa Patterson Philpot, sisters Reba Philpot Lightsey and Sara Philpot Tyler of Pinson, Alabama. Upon graduation from high school, Jim married Eva Joann Whitley (Jo). The couple resided in Spokane, Washington and Long Beach, California while Jim served in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of his military service, they returned to Birmingham, Alabama where Jim attended Howard College, now Sanford University. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, Jim worked in an executive capacity for the Boy Scouts of America. He later went to work for Birmingham city schools where fell in love with teaching. He received his doctorate of education from the University of Alabama and taught for many years. The last years of his teaching career were spent at Troy University, where he retired. He and Jo moved to Hernando, Mississippi. They joined Fellowship Baptist Church, now Redemption Church, where he served as a deacon and taught a men’s Sunday School class for many years. His passions were his church, travel, and teaching. He was faithfully committed to his wife and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. He had an unflagging devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jo Philpot, daughter, Cyndi Porter (Kenny), and son, Paul W. Philpot. Also are his grandchildren, Elizabeth Lee Vollmar (Andrew), Whitley Porter Rives (Will), Dr. John K Porter (Giully), Cannon T. Porter (Kathryn), J. Andrew Philpot, Pearson T. Philpot, Sierra R. Philpot, Forrest W. Philpot, Anna G. Philpot. His great grandchildren are Rose Vollmar, Thane Rives, Adeline Rives, Sophia Porter, Camila Porter, John K. Porter II, Elijah S. Porter, and Rhett T. Porter. The family will receive friends, Wednesday, October 13th 2021, 10 am until Service time at 11am all held at Hernando Funeral Home. Interment will be at Hernando Memorial Park Cemetery.
