Obituary for Lewis Edward Burt

Lewis Edward Burt passed away March 3, 2023. Born October 15, 1930, son of Wesley Anderson Burt and Pauline Rounsaville Burt. Being born an only child, with no children, I find myself writing my own obituary.
I was born in a two-room log house in the community of Pearidge, Grenada County in the State of Mississippi. I attended grade school the first four years at a 3-room school in Rose Bloom. Grade 5, I attended Cascilla, Sumner, and Grenada. My final seven years were at Grenada. I graduated Grenada high in 1948. I graduated on a Thursday night and joined the Navy on Friday morning. Served 4 years. Three years, three months, three weeks, and three days being sea duty. Served one year plus aboard USS Pollux AKS4, served the remaining time aboard USS Valley Forge CV45, and aircraft carrier during the Korean Conflict. While on leave September 7, 1951, I married Flo Pressgrove. This marriage lasted 64 years. I lost my beloved Flo, September 1, 2015.
After being discharged, I worked for Plough Inc. for 3 months. After leaving Plough, I went to work for Burroughs Corp as a field engineer for 34 years. Retired at age 56.
Three main events helped charter the course of my life.
1. I married Flo Pressgrove. She prodded me to be the best I could be.
2. I was born the son of sharecropper parents. I couldn’t have been more proud of them. This gave me incentive.
3. Being 10 years old, my mother sent me to the local grocery in Sumner, MS to get a 5lb. bag of sugar. I was turned away because my father had not paid for his bill for the month; this being the last day of the month. I promised my mother that no one would ever turn me down again. If I couldn’t pay for it, I didn’t need it. I have kept that promise for 82 years.

I have lived a wonderful life thanks to a multitude of many friends.
If you read this and go to my funeral, dress casual, I will be. In lieu of flowers, send flowers. I love flowers. Florists have to eat too.
