Matthew Layne Petty passed away December 31, 2020, at the age of 40. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew.
Matthew had an insatiable curiosity and a love of life. He was an extraordinary athlete excelling in football and baseball. His love of sports continued throughout his lifetime. Matthew was fearless and loved the outdoors participating wholeheartedly in the Boy Scouts. Only he could be relied on as the ultimate navigator with his impeccable sense of direction.
Matthew continued to learn everything from history to sports to Bible. Ever the wordsmith, his dictionary collection didn’t have a single binding or cover left intact. He shared the “word of the day” with his family before it became pop culture. Matthew held his family captive with perfect recall of childhood stories and memories that only his eidetic memory could recount.
Matthew was passionate about music and loved live band performances. Music was an essential part of his day and he loved every genre. He took pride in his extensive collection of unique playing card decks.
His love for his family, his beautiful mind, his great sense of humor will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him best.
He is survived by his mother Millie Petty, sisters Teri Selby (Bill) and Rachel Allen (Brian). Nephews and nieces: Erica Capers-Moon (Mark), Eli Selby, Emma, Laycee, and John Layne Allen. Great nephews Wyatt Capers and James Moon. His uncle Mike Slaughter (Terri).
He is also survived by his father Terry Petty (Charlotte), sister Valerie Kelly (Nick), brother Matthew Clay. Nephews and nieces: Alana, Olyn and Audrey Kelly. Grandparents Roy and Barbara Petty.
He is preceded in death by his brother T.J. and his grandparents Willie and Lillie Slaughter.
