Obituary for Sylvia Skelton (White)

Sylvia Skelton 87, of Hernando passed away June 7, 2022 at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven. She was born July 30, 1934 in Nesbit, MS to her parents, the late, Henry and Abbie White. Mrs. Sylvia Skelton, a Christian lady with many names, mom, Christian chick and one of the howling four. When Saturday night came the four ladies would meet, pray and ask God for traveling safety. Ms. Sylvia, Ms. Flora, Ms. Nell and Bertha would head out to a gospel singing. Sylvia always had a smile on her face and hands clapping to the music. She was a member of Jackson Chapel Church who sat on the front pew after she had to use a walker to get around. Sylvia didn’t miss many Sunday's, sometimes would fall asleep and wake up smiling. Everyone knew she didn't feel well, and some would try to help her. She hated to ask anyone for help and she didn't want to be a burden. Ms. Sylvia and James Louis didn't have any children but their beloved fur babies filled their hearts with love and smiles when they could pet and talk to them. When they took a trip the fur babies went too. If a motel didn’t allow pets they wouldn't stay there. Mrs. Sylvia leaves behind people to remember her by the love and caring acts she did for them and never wanted any praise for what she did. Mrs. Sylvia we will always love, remember and thank God for the time we had with you. Rest in peace and keep on smiling! Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, James Louis Skelton and her best friend, Ruby Thompson. She is survived by her close friends that she considered her family. Those include, Kay Brewer, whom she considered to be her daughter, her best friend, Bertha Miller and all her extended family at Jackson Chapel Church. Other survivors include, her nieces and nephews, James Patterson of Kansas, Terry Sparling of Idaho, Jerry Goram of Alabama, David Patterson of Georgia, Monica Burgen of Wyoming, Paul Patterson of Idaho and Mary Patterson of Alabama. Sylvia was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed greatly. Service will be 1 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Hernando Funeral Home with the family receiving friends beginning at 11 am. Interment will follow at Love Cemetery, Hernando, MS. Sylvia requested memorials be made to Jackson Chapel Church, 2231 Grays Creek Road, Hernando, MS 38632.
