Obituary for Tommy Smitherman

Tommy Glenn Smitherman was born on April 30th, 1953 to Earnest and Julia Smitherman in Dodgeville, MS. He was the seventh of either children. He grew up in Tate County and attended Independence Elementary and High School. In fear of having to tell his mom he dropped out of High School, he joined the US Army at seventeen years old in 1972.
After serving four years as Military Police, he met the love of his life Barbara in 1977. He took great pride in raising their girls. He loved to take them camping and on nature walks.
He made a career as a trailer mechanic but his passions were hunting, fishing, and gardening.
His later years were spent enjoying as much time as he could with his grand and great-grand kids. Truth be told, he might have even liked them more than his own. He would spend hours outside, taking them fishing, riding them around, or just letting them lead him around the yard.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Earnest Lavert Smitherman and Julia May Hall Smitherman, and siblings Coy B. (Kenneth), Charles Edward, Earnest Wayne, and Ann Reed.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Smitherman, of 44 years, his three daughters Angie Birmingham (Gene), Bobbi Johnston (Clif), and Dawn Rakestraw (Corey), nine grandkids Michael, Scooter, Breanna, Kelsey, Jerry, Konstance, Kori Leigh, Tres, Coleton, six great grandkids Braylee, Kathryn, Paislee, Oakley, Amelia, Brentley, and three siblings Howard, Jackie, and Pat.

The family will be receiving friends Friday, December 31st from 12-1 pm with services beginning at 1 pm all at Hernando Funeral Home. Internment to follow at Bett Cemetery.
